The EU’s Chat Control Proposal

What it is, why it matters, and what’s at stake

The Proposal

The European Union is considering legislation that could require digital platforms to scan private communications for illegal content.

While protecting children and combating crime are important goals, the proposal raises serious concerns about privacy, security, and the future of encrypted communication in Europe.

Why It Matters

Private communication could become less private

Measures that require message scanning risk undermining the confidentiality of personal communications.

Encryption is at risk

Strong encryption protects journalists, activists, businesses, and ordinary citizens from cybercrime and surveillance.

Innovation depends on trust

Europe’s digital economy relies on secure services that users can trust.

The consequences go beyond Europe

EU regulation often shapes global standards. Decisions made in Brussels can influence digital rights worldwide.

The Bigger Picture

Europe faces a difficult challenge: protecting citizens while preserving fundamental freedoms.

Well-intentioned regulation can have unintended consequences. Policies that weaken privacy, reduce trust in digital services, or discourage innovation may ultimately leave Europe less competitive and less free.

Our Position

We oppose the EU’s Chat Control proposal.

While protecting children and combating crime are legitimate objectives, Chat Control would require unprecedented monitoring of private communications and risks undermining encryption, privacy, and digital security across Europe.

We believe Europe can protect its citizens without sacrificing fundamental rights.

We therefore support policies that:

  • Protect children through targeted and effective measures

  • Preserve strong end-to-end encryption

  • Respect privacy and fundamental rights

  • Reject mass surveillance of private communications

  • Promote innovation, security, and trust in digital services
