Nuclear Energy
What it is, why it matters, and what’s at stake
The Challenge
Europe needs more energy.
As electricity demand rises and global competition intensifies, Europe faces a growing challenge: how to provide reliable, affordable, and clean energy while reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels.
Yet across much of Europe, nuclear energy has been restricted, phased out, or subjected to lengthy regulatory and political barriers despite being one of the safest and most reliable sources of electricity available.
Why It Matters
Reliable power for a competitive economy
Unlike weather-dependent energy sources, nuclear power provides electricity around the clock. Industry, manufacturing, data centres, and emerging technologies all depend on stable energy supplies.
Stable and predictable energy prices
Energy shocks hurt households, businesses, and economic growth. A larger nuclear fleet can help reduce exposure to volatile fossil fuel markets and geopolitical disruptions.
Greater energy security
Europe imports much of its energy. Nuclear power strengthens strategic autonomy by reducing dependence on external suppliers and increasing domestic energy production.
Low-carbon electricity
Nuclear power produces very low emissions while generating large amounts of electricity from a small physical footprint. It can complement renewable energy as part of a diversified energy mix.
The Bigger Picture
Europe’s energy policy is ultimately about competitiveness.
High energy costs, supply uncertainty, and dependence on imported fuels weaken Europe’s economy and limit its ability to compete with the United States and China.
A growing number of European leaders now recognise that turning away from nuclear power was a mistake. The challenge is no longer whether nuclear energy has a role to play, but whether Europe can afford to ignore one of its most reliable sources of electricity.
Nuclear energy is not a silver bullet. But a Europe that wants to remain prosperous, innovative, and strategically autonomous should not place unnecessary barriers in the way of its development.

Our Position
We support policies that:
Remove unnecessary barriers to nuclear development
Accelerate permitting and approval processes
Support investment in new nuclear technologies
Treat nuclear energy fairly within EU energy policy
Strengthen Europe’s energy security
Ensure affordable and reliable electricity for households and industry
Europe should embrace all proven technologies that contribute to prosperity, competitiveness, and energy security.
